Biguanide Antidiabetics
Biguanide antidiabetics are used to reduce blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes and increase the body's uptake of glucose. They reduce the amount of sugar produced by the liver, increase absorption of sugar by muscle cells, and decrease the body's need for insulin. Glucophage (metformin) is one of the most commonly prescribed biguanide antidiabetics. It is often combined with other diabetes medicines, for example in Glucovance (metformin and glyburide) and Metaglip (metformin and glipizide).
