Carbapenem and Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor Combination Antibiotics
Carbapenem and Beta-Lactamase inhibitor combinations are medicines that combine carbapenem with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase enzymes are an enzyme that greatly reduces the activity of antibiotics such as penicillin and cephamycins. Carbapenems are antibiotics that have the greatest potency against bacteria, but at times bacteria can develop structural changes in their cell wall and acquire mettallo-beta-lactamases that can degrade carbapenems quickly. Beta-lactamase inhibitors block the activity of beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing the degradation of carbapenems. For some infections, a carbapenem with a combination of beta-lactamase inhibitor is preferred. The combination increases the activity of the carbapenem and make it harder for bacteria to develop a resistance to the drugs. The most common combination is meropenem / vaborbactum.
