Carbapenems

Carbapenems stop the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the production of bacterial cell wall. Carbapenems do so by binding themselves to the penicillin-binding proteins and obstructing the development of the cell wall. Carbapenems are a class of beta-lactum antibiotics, that have the ability to inhibit beta-lactamase enzymes – a type of enzyme that greatly reduces the activity of antibiotics such as penicillins and cephamycins. They posses the broadest potency against bacteria and are often reserved for severe infections or used as a last-line agent. Most common are doripenem, meropenem and ertapenem, and are only available with a prescription.
