Cytostatic Aromatase Inhibitors

Cytostatic aromatase inhibitors are used to slow or stop cancer cells from growing and are used to treat postmenopausal patients with breast cancer. Aromatase is an enzyme that synthesizes estrogen. Cytostatic aromatase inhibitors are taken to block the production of estrogen or to block the action of estrogen on receptors. An example of a commonly prescribed cytostatic aromatase inhibitor is Aromasin (exemestane), which is an irreversible steroidal inhibitor. Nonsteroidal inhibitors include Arimidex (anastrozole) and Femara (letrozole), which inhibit synthesis of estrogen.
