Direct Renin Inhibitors
Renin inhibitors are a class of drug used to treat high blood pressure – also known as hypertension. Renin inhibitors block the activity of the enzyme renin. Renin is an enzyme that mediates the volume of extracellurar fluid in our arteries and therefore regulates blood pressure. By blocking this enzyme the result is vasodilation – the widening of the blood vessels, which in turn reduces blood pressure. Most common renin inhibitor is aliskiren, which goes by the brand name Tekurna.
