Fractionated Heparins (LMWHs)
Fractionated heparins (LMWHs) are anticoagulants used to treat diseases that feature thrombosis and as a prophylaxis where there is a high risk of thrombosis, for example after knee, hip or abdominal surgeries. They may also be used to treat existing blood clots in the lungs or veins, and in the treatment of myocardial infarction. They work by inhibiting coagulation or clotting, reducing the chance of thrombosis. Commonly prescribed fractionated heparins (LMWHs) include Lovenox (enoxaparin sodium) and Fragmin (dalteparin).
Drugs classified as Fractionated Heparins (LMWHs) are frequently used to treat the following conditions:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Pulmonary Embolism
- acute myocardial infarction
