Glycylcycline Antibiotics are a new antibiotic developed to over come bacterial resistance to tetracyclines. This new generation of antibiotic is a derivative of tetracyclines. Glycylcycline antibiotics stop the reproduction of bacteria by blocking the bacterial protein synthesis. They are most potent against bacteria that is resistant to tetracyclines but have a wide range of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Glycylcycline Antibiotics are also active against resistant organisms such as penicillin-resistant streptococcus pneumoniae and methicillin resistant staphylocci. Glycylcycline Antibiotics have the generic name tigecycline and are only available with a prescription.
