HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors/statins and other lipid modifying agent combinations are used to treat the symptoms of coronary heart disease and to lower cholesterol. They are a combination of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, also known as statins, and another lipid modifying agent, such as niacin or ezetimibe.These medications can be used to reduce levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, raise high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and reduce triglyceride levels. Commonly prescribed HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors/statins and other lipid modifying agent combinations include Vytorin (ezetimibe, simvastatin) and Advicor (lovastatin, niacin).
