Intermediate-acting and short-acting human insulins and analogs are medicines used to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control glucose levels. Short-acting insulin has a rapid onset (5-15 minutes) and is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. Their action is effective for between 4-6 hours and they are often taken following a meal to help diabetic patients regulate their blood sugar levels. Intermediate-acting insulin usually starts to work after 1-2 hours and lasts for between 6-8 hours.
