Peripheral Opioid Receptor Antagonists

Peripheral opioid receptor antagonists are used to alleviate the side effects of opioids, such as constipation. They block the unwanted effects caused by opioids by binding to the opioid receptors, such as those in the gastrointestinal tract, to prevent opioid-induced constipation. They do not block the analgesic effects of opioids. Commonly prescribed peripheral opioid receptor antagonists include Relistor (methylnaltrexone) and Entereg (alvimopan).
