Sulfonylurea antidiabetics are medications used to treat diabetes type 2 by lowering blood sugar levels. They achieve this by increasing insulin release in the pancreas. Second generation sulfonylurea antidiabetics have an increased potency compared to their first generation counterparts. Commonly prescribed examples of second generation sulfonylurea antidiabetics include Amaryl (glimepiride), Glucotrol (glipizide) and Glynase (glyburide micronized).
