Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), also known as acute myelocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, and acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, is a rapidly progressing form of cancer that develops in the bone marrow and can spread to affect other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, liver, central nervous system and spleen. It results in an increase in the number of white blood cells in the bloodstream.
AML is slightly more common in men than in women and is unusual in patients under the age of 45. Around 21,000 new cases of AML are expected to be diagnosed in 2017, according to figures from the American Cancer Society. The organization also estimates more than 10,000 people will die as a result of the disease this year.
Treatment of AML involves targeting the unhealthy blood cells in the bone marrow and blood, with the goal of putting cancer into remission. Chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, and radiation are often used. Commonly prescribed chemotherapy drug classes include vinca alkaloids and analogs, and pyrimidine analogs.
