Adrenal Cancer

Adrenal Cancer

Adrenal cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer affecting the adrenal glands, which are responsible for hormone production. While some adrenal gland tumors are benign, others may be cancerous. It is an aggressive cancer that can easily spread to other areas of the body if left untreated.

Symptoms of adrenal cancer are often related to the effect of the tumor on the gland's production of hormones. and may include: weight gain, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, irregular periods, frequent urination, muscle cramps, increased facial hair, and early puberty in children.

Treatment of the condition sometimes requires removal of cancerous tumors, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Commonly prescribed medication used to treat adrenal cancer include certain cardiac preparations, and cancer drugs such as Lysodren (mitotane), which works by killing adrenal gland cells and decreasing the amount of hormones made by the adrenal gland.
