Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever or seasonal allergies, is a common condition affecting millions of Americans. It is caused by a reaction to an allergen, such as mold, dust, pollen or animal dander.

Typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis include cold-like symptoms, such as sneezing, itchiness, and a blocked or a runny nose. It is often a seasonal condition with patients affected more when pollen counts are high.

Allergic rhinitis can usually be treated with over-the-counter medication, such as antihistamines. Prescription drugs may be recommended by physicians in severe cases.

Drug classes often used to treat hay fever and allergies include antihistamine and opioid antitussive combinations, sedating antihistamine and decongestant combinations, antihistamine, non-opioid antitussive, and decongestant combinations, and ocular anti-allergics, mast cell stabilizers.
