Amoebiasis
Amoebiasis, also known as amoebic dysentery, is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba amoebas. Infections occur when people ingest contaminants, which is more likely to occur in less sanitary conditions.
Symptoms of amoebiasis vary, ranging from non-existent to severe. Among the possible symptoms patients with amoebiasis may experience are abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, inflammation of the intestine, and anemia.
The condition is treated with medication. Commonly prescribed drugs used to treat amoebiasis are anaerobicides, Flagyl (metronidazole) for example, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and certain antimalarials, such as Aralen (chloroquine phosphate).
