Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a motor neuron disease characterized by progressive degeneration of the nerve cells that enable communication between the nervous system and body's muscles. It can eventually lead to respiratory failure as patients lose the ability to control the muscles of the chest and diaphragm.
Symptoms of ALS include loss of strength in the muscles, difficulty swallowing and breathing, weight loss, and paralysis. A number of different forms of treatment are available to slow the progression of the disease and to treat the symptoms.
Commonly prescribed medication for ALS include special ALS drugs and medicines prescribed to treat particular symptoms.
