Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening severe allergic reaction to an allergen, such as insect venom, certain foods, medicines, chemicals or other substances. Symptoms include the development of an itchy red rash, swelling, and obstruction of the mouth, throat, and nose, a drop in blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

If not treated immediately, it can lead to coma, cardiac arrest, and death. Those with severe allergies that can lead to anaphylaxis often carry epinephrine pens. Drug classes used to treat anaphylaxis are cardiac stimulants excluding dopaminergic agents, corticosteroids, and antihistamines.
