Atrophic Vaginitis
Atrophic vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina and decreased lubrication. Symptoms include vaginal dryness, soreness, and itching. Sexual intercourse may be painful and patients may experience bleeding afterward. It is caused by low levels of estrogen in the body and is often experienced by postmenopausal women or as a side effect of certain medications.
Treatment of atrophic vaginitis includes over-the-counter lubricants and medication to increase estrogen levels, which may be in the form of tablets or creams. Common drug classes used to treat atrophic vaginitis include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) and estrogens, excluding hormonal contraceptives.
