Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which people regularly feel an uncontrollable urge to consume large quantities of food. It is different from anorexia and bulimia in that it is sporadic. Recent studies suggest up to two percent of Americans struggle with binge eating.
Symptoms of binge eating disorder include frequent episodes of consuming abnormally large quantities of food, feeling a lack of control over how much is eaten, continuing eating until uncomfortably full, fluctuations in weight, feelings of low self-esteem, and frequent dieting.
Treatment traditionally involves psychotherapy to help break the pattern of overeating, but doctors may also prescribe antidepressants to treat certain symptoms, as well as psychostimulants, amphetamines to suppress appetite.
