Calcium Deficiency
Calcium deficiency is a condition in which patients have low levels of calcium in the blood. Calcium is an important mineral required by the body for building bones and ensuring the proper functioning of the heart, muscles, nerves and blood vessels, and is best absorbed with Vitamin D and magnesium.
Symptoms of a calcium deficiency include a tingling sensation in the face, hands or feet; weak or brittle nails; muscle spasms; depression; arrhythmia’s; and memory loss. Calcium deficiency increases the risk of developing conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, and calcium deficiency disease.
Calcium deficiency is usually treated with calcium supplements and may also require calcium injections. Physicians may also prescribe vitamin D supplements to aid in the absorption of calcium.
