Castleman Disease

Castleman Disease

Castleman disease is a rare condition caused by an excess of cells growing in the lymph nodes, which eventually form into hard growths. Symptoms of Castleman disease include shortness of breath, loss of appetite, wheezing or coughing.

Unicentric Castleman disease (UCD) affects a single group of lymph nodes, for example in the chest or belly, while multicentric Castleman disease (MCD) may affect many lymph nodes throughout the body.

Treatment of UCD usually involves surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy to remove growths. MCD is a more serious condition as physicians are unable to remove problem areas. Both conditions may be managed but not cured with medication. Interleukin inhibitors are commonly used to treat Castleman disease.
