Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus connected to the vagina. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common cause of cervical cancer. It is usually diagnosed early on through a Pap test and is often successfully treated when caught early.
Symptoms of cervical cancer include vaginal bleeding after intercourse, between periods or after menopause, weight loss, back pain, appetite loss, fatigue, bone fractures, and pain during sexual intercourse. However, early-stage cervical cancer may be asymptomatic.
Cervical cancer is usually treated with surgery to remove the uterus (hysterectomy), which can cure the condition and prevent the cancer returning. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are also treatment options.
Drug classes commonly used to treat cervical cancer include topoisomerase inhibitors to slow cancer cell growth and other cytotoxic antibiotics.
