Colitis

Colitis

Colitis is an inflammation of the colon – the colon is also known as the bowel or large intestine. Colitis is most common between the ages of 15-30 years.

It’s not always clear what causes this inflammation, family history may be a cause; but it may also be believed that certain factors such as medications, bacteria, viruses, auto-immune disease or even bile acid irritating the bowel can lead to colitis.

Colitis causes pain in the abdomen, diarrhea and even blood in the stool. Other symptoms can range from nausea, bloating and increased gas, to fever or chills.

Your doctor may recommend a blood test to determine the cause of your colitis. Although there is no cure for colitis, with certain dietary changes, medication and rest you should begin to feel better.

Medications such as aminosalicylates and corticosteroids both have anti-inflammatory agents than can help with the inflammation in the colon and reduce the symptoms of colitis.
