Constipation is characterized by infrequent bowel movements or difficulty passing stools, which may last for several weeks or longer. Generally, having fewer than three bowel movements in a week is classed as constipation.
There are many possible causes of constipation, including conditions causing blockages in the colon or rectum, such as anal fissure, colon cancer or rectal cancer. Nerve problems around the colon or rectum, muscle issues, or hormonal conditions may also cause constipation.
Risk factors for constipation include being an older adult, dehydration, a low fiber diet, low levels of physical activity, certain medications, and mental health conditions, such as depression or eating disorders.
Constipation may be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medication. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause, but drug classes commonly used to treat constipation include softeners and emollients, osmotically-acting laxatives, chloride channel activators, and other products for functional bowel disorders.
