The term "coronavirus" refers to a variety of common virus affecting birds, mammals and humans. They typically causes an infection in the nose, sinuses or upper throat, leading to cold or flu-like symptoms.
There are seven types of coronavirus that affect humans, four of which are commonly contracted by people across the world and which generally cause to mild-to-moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, such as the common cold.
However, coronaviruses that affect animals can evolve, leading to new, more severe diseases in humans. These are severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and most recently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In December 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) identified a new coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This is the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and on March 11th, 2020, the WHO categorized the outbreak as a pandemic.
