Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a general term that describes skin irritation. It is a common condition and takes on many forms. Dermatitis isn’t contagious but can make people feel self-conscious.

There are many types of dermatitis, and symptoms will vary from one to the other.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) usually starts in childhood. It is a red, itchy rash that is often found in the creases of the skin, such as inside elbows and behind knees. When scratched, the skin may leak a fluid, that then scabs over. Seasonal flare up of atopic dermatitis are common.

Contact dermatitis is when the skin comes into contact with an irritant such as a chemical or allergen. You may develop blisters.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that causes scaly patched, red skin and stubborn dandruff. It is most common on the oily areas of the body, such as face, scalp and back. It can be a long-term condition with season flare up and periods of improvement. In infants it is called cradle cap.

Follicular eczema causes the skin to thicken and the hair follicles develop bumps. It is most common in Africa American and dark-brown skin.

Scratching a rash can cause skin sores, that become infected, and are easily spread.

Treatment will vary depending on the cause and symptoms of your dermatitis they could include. Corticosteriod creams, gels or ointments, are applied directly to the affected skin. Exposing the affected skin to controlled amount of natural light (phototherapy). Oral corticosteroid pills for severe dermatitis.
