It is common to sometimes feel dizzy, lightheaded, or off-balance, and usually it is not serious.
Feelings of dizziness usually include going off balance, lightheaded or fainting, like you’re spinning or things around you are spinning – vertigo. There are several reasons that could cause dizziness. It could result from something simple such as motion sickness, or a disturbance to the inner ear, infection, reduced blood flow due to blocked arteries or heart disease, medication side effects, anxiety, or another condition. There are times that the cause can not be identified.
Dizziness will usually go away on its own, but there are some things you can do to take care of yourself while you are feeling dizzy. Lie down until the dizziness passes, then get up slowly. If you need to move, move carefully and slowly. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, avoid caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs, and get plenty of rest.
Do not bend down suddenly or get up suddenly after sitting or lying down. Do not do anything that could be dangerous while you are dizzy, such as driving or climbing a ladder. If you are feeling like things are spinning, do not lie completely flat. See a doctor if your dizziness keeps reoccurring, you are having problems hearing, there is a ringing or other sound in your ears, you have double or blurred vision or your face, arms or legs feel numb. If you suffer from other symptoms such as fainting, headaches, or nausea.
