Dysentery
Dysentery is an infection of the intestines that causes diarrhea containing blood or mucus. Dysentery is highly contagious and can be passed on if you do not take the right precautions, such as properly washing your hands.
There are two main types of dysentery, the first is called bacillary dysentery and is caused by shigella bacteria. This is the most common type of dysentery. The second is called amoebic dysentery and is caused by a parasite, which is mainly found in tropical areas.
Symptoms can include painful stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting and a fever.
Dysentery usually gets better on its own after 3-7 days, so usually no treatment is needed. It is important however to drink plenty of fluids, and use an oral re-hydration solution if necessary, to avoid dehydration. Over the counter pain relief medications can help relieve any pain or fever caused by the dysentery.
As you are infectious to other people while you are ill and have symptoms, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent the spread of infections. You should stay away from school, work or other people until you have been free from symptoms for at least 48 hours. Wash all clothing, bedding and towels on the hottest cycle in the machine to kill the infection, clean all toilet seats, flush handles, faucets with hot water and a disinfectant.
