Flu

Flu

Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is a common ailment caused by the influenza virus. The infection is in the respiratory tract and affects the nose, throat and occasionally the lungs. It is a contagious illness and is easily passed on to others.

Symptoms of the flu include fatigue, sore throat, cough, aches, runny or blocked nose, headaches and fever. In most cases, patients will recover from flu with adequate rest and hydration and there are over-the-counter medications such as cough medicine, decongestants and antihistamines to help alleviate symptoms.

Tamiflu or Flumadine may also speed up recovery and reduce symptoms, but they are most effective in the 48 hours after symptoms first manifest. Annual flu vaccines can also help you avoid contracting the virus during flu season.
