Gallstones

Gallstones

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that form in the gallbladder, the organ situated below the liver that holds bile to release into the small intestine. The size of gallstones varies, ranging from a tiny grain to almost two inches in diameter. The most common gallstones are made up of cholesterol, although in some cases pigment gallstones may form.

Gallstones may not cause any symptoms, but in some cases, they may lodge in a duct causing a blockage and resulting in symptoms such as sudden pain in the upper right or center of the abdomen; pain between the shoulder blades; pain in the right shoulder; or nausea and vomiting. Pain caused by gallstones may last for anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours.

The risk of gallstones developing may be reduced by losing weight slowly (if overweight), maintaining a healthy weight, and not skipping meals. Treatment of gallstones usually involves surgery to remove the gallbladder or medication to dissolve the gallstones. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat gallstones include bile acid agents.
