Growth Hormone Deficiency
Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a rare condition in which the anterior pituitary gland does not secrete sufficient quantities of growth hormone. It may be a congenital condition; one acquired later in life as a result of radiation therapy, a tumor in the brain, infection, or trauma; or of unknown cause (idiopathic).
Symptoms of GHD in children include slow muscle development and growth and a later onset of puberty. In adults, signs of GHD include lower energy levels, increased body fat and cholesterol, changing body composition, osteoporosis, insulin resistance, reduced muscle strength, and heart problems.
GHD is usually treated with regular injections of human growth hormones such as Omnitrope (somatropin).
