Hepatitis B is a highly contagious disease estimated to affect up to 2.2 million people across the U.S.. It is spread via infected blood and bodily fluids. In the majority of cases, the body's immune system fights off the infection and patients develop and immunity to further infections.
It is largely symptomless, but when they do manifest, they may be similar to those experienced when patients have the flu. Symptoms may include: fever, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, muscle and joint pains.
Vaccinations are available to protect against hepatitis B. Common drug classes used to treat hepatitis B are nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors/ NRTISs for hepatitis, and interferon alphas.
