Iron Deficiency
Iron deficiency refers to low levels of iron in the blood. Iron is an important component of blood, enabling the red blood cells to carry oxygen. Approximately 10 million Americans have an iron deficiency.
Symptoms of iron deficiency include fatigue, pale skin, dizziness and feeling lightheaded, shortness of breath, decreased immune function and increased susceptibility to infection, and iron deficiency anemia.
Possible causes include pregnancy, poor diet, blood loss, and certain stomach and intestinal conditions.
Treatment of iron deficiency usually involves dietary changes to increase the consumption of foods rich in iron, and supplements. Drug classes commonly used to treat an iron deficiency include iron supplements, folic acid and derivative supplements, and iron combination supplements.
