Kidney disease refers to a number of conditions in which the kidneys cease to function correctly. The kidneys are responsible for cleaning the blood, filtering out extra water and controlling blood pressure. When they do not function correctly, waste products may build up in the body. Around one in three adults in the United States are at risk of developing kidney disease, according to figures from the CDC.
Kidney disease may occur as a result of injury, dehydration, sepsis, certain drugs, an enlarged prostate, pregnancy complications and certain autoimmune conditions. Chronic kidney disease is when the kidneys do not function correctly for more than three months. Common causes of chronic kidney disease include diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, immune system diseases, viral infections, and urinary tract infections.
Early stages of kidney disease may be asymptomatic, but it may result in fatigue, swollen ankles, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, dry skin, problems sleeping, and unexplained weight loss.
Treatment of kidney disease may require hospitalization and medication. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat kidney disease are parathyroid hormone analogs and modifiers, erythropoietin products, mineral binding agents, vitamin d supplements, and iron supplements.
