Lipodystrophy

Lipodystrophy is a disorder affecting the way the body stores and uses fat. There are two forms of the condition; inherited lipodystrophy, which is a hereditary disorder; and acquired lipodystrophy, which is the result of an underlying condition or medication. Patients with HIV are at a higher risk of acquired lipodystrophy. Other possible causes of the condition include infections, such as pneumonia, hepatitis, or measles; autoimmune diseases; injury; and repeated injection to the same site, for example, insulin injections.

The main symptom of lipodystrophy is a loss of body fat, but it may also cause high blood pressure, high levels of protein in the urine during the later stages of pregnancy, and irregular menstruation. Lipodystrophy may develop into a eclampsia (pregnancy-related seizures), which can be extremely dangerous to mothers and unborn children.

Treatment of lipodystrophy often involves lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy, low-fat diet, and getting regular exercise. Medication may also be prescribed to manage the symptoms of the condition. Drug classes used to treat lipodystrophy are growth hormones, and other hormones and preparations with similar actions.
