Lupus

Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease. It causes the immune system to attack the organs and tissues. Lupus has various degrees of severity and some patients may manifest visible symptoms on the skin. It may also cause internal damage to the body's organs.

The condition may be passed on genetically, but other factors may contribute to lupus developing, such as: being female, being over 15 years of age, smoking, exposure to the sun, exposure to certain chemicals. Certain medication, notably some anti-seizure, blood pressure and antibiotics may also cause lupus to develop. In these cases, symptoms usually disappear once the medication is no longer administered.

Symptoms are varied, but may include: tiredness, sores in the mouth, hair loss, sensitivity to light, rashes, and chest pain. Mild cases may be treated with corticosteroids or topical corticosteroids. Other drug classes commonly prescribed include antirheumetics and anti-inflammatories.
