Menopause is a normal condition experienced by all women as they reach a certain age. It describes a range of symptoms occurring around the time a woman ceases menstruation, marking the end of the period of her life during which she can conceive.
In some cases, it may occur as a result of surgery, damage to ovaries, or chemotherapy. If it occurs before the age of 40, it is classified as premature menopause.
Among the symptoms of menopause are: irregular periods, changes in mood, sleeping issues, dry skin, vaginal dryness, night sweats, and weight gain.
Menopause does not require treatments, but physicians may prescribe medication to women who experience severe symptoms. This may include hormone therapy with drugs such as androgens with female hormone combinations, or low doses of antidepressants.
