Motion sickness is a term to describe an unpleasant combination of symptoms, such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, that can occur when traveling.
The condition is caused by mixed signals being sent to the brain by the eyes and the inner ear. People experiencing motion sickness usually either cannot see the motion felt by the body or cannot feel the motion which they can see. There is a suggestion that the brain interprets these signals as an indication of poisoning by neurotoxins and stimulates the body to eliminate the toxins by vomiting.
The symptoms of motion sickness usually begin with a feeling of uneasiness followed by cold sweats and dizziness. Some people may exhibit pale skin and increased saliva production in combination with a headache and fatigue. Nausea and vomiting usually occur after the initial symptoms. There are no significant health risks associated with motion sickness unless a person starts to develop dehydration from persistent vomiting, and symptoms slowly decrease and eventually disappear once the motion has stopped.
A wide range of treatments are available for motion sickness including devices such as pressure point bracelets and simple changes in the environment (for example, sitting by the open window of a car). For some people, home remedies such as ginger and peppermint produce good results and relaxation techniques and acupuncture may also be effective. Over-the-counter and prescription medications are also readily available such as dimenhydrinate, scopolamine, meclizine, promethazine, and cyclizine, but most should be taken with care as they often have side-effects, in particular, drowsiness.
