Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is a common symptom occurring due to inflammation of the nasal tissues and blood vessels, resulting in a “stuffy” or congested feeling. It may be accompanied by nasal discharge and is normally considered a minor ailment.

Common causes of nasal congestion are allergies and hay fever, the common cold, the flu, nasal polyps, sinusitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition to a stuffy feeling and nasal discharge, other possible symptoms include mild facial or head pain and snoring.

Treatment of nasal congestion will depend on the underlying cause. In some cases, for example, severe nasal polyps, surgery may be necessary. However, in the majority of cases, nasal congestion is effectively treated with over-the-counter or prescription decongestants and other medication.

Drug classes often used to treat nasal congestion are decongestants, topical nasal corticosteroids, antihistamine, non-opioid antitussive, and decongestant combinations, sedating antihistamine and decongestant combinations, belladonna and derivatives, corticosteroids, inhalant, and opioid antitussive, decongestant, and expectorant combinations.
