Neutropenia is a blood disorder characterized by low levels of certain white blood cells called neutrophils, which are responsible for protecting the body by destroying bacteria, viruses and other infections. Consequently, people with neutropenia are more susceptible to infections than people with normal levels of white blood cells.
Neutropenia is more common in newborn infants than adults. Possible causes of a low production of neutrophils include congenital bone marrow production problems, leukemia, tuberculosis, dengue fever, viral infections, and some autoimmune conditions, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s disease.
Certain therapies and treatments may also cause low levels of neutrophils, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and some medications, including certain antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and epilepsy drugs.
In some cases, neutropenia has no discernible symptoms, but common signs of the condition include fever, skin abscesses, otitis, hypotension, rashes, problems healing, and a higher than normal rate of infection.
Treatment of neutropenia often includes medication or treatment to address infections caused by low levels of white blood cells, such as antibiotics, or antivirals. Physicians may also adjust existing prescriptions if medication or therapy is the cause of the neutropenia.
Other treatments include stem cell transplants and granulocyte colony stimulating factors, which stimulate the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. Drug classes used to treat neutropenia are colony-stimulating factors, such as Zarxio (filgrastim, G-CSF) or Neupogen (filgrastim, G-CSF).
