Nutritional deficiency occurs when there is a lack of certain vitamins, minerals or other nutrients in the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than nine out of ten Americans are deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral. Potassium deficiency is particularly common, affecting more than 90 percent of people in the United States.
Nutritional deficiencies can cause a variety of other conditions and ailments, such as anemia (iron deficiency), rickets (vitamin D, calcium and potassium deficiencies), and osteoporosis (vitamin D deficiency and calcium deficiency). Other common deficiencies include vitamin K deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and magnesium deficiency.
The vitamins and minerals required for a healthy body are found in food, but some people may require more of a certain nutrient or need to supplement their diet. A healthy diet and increasing the intake of nutrients may alleviate many of the symptoms of diseases associated with nutritional deficiencies.
Drug classes and nutritional supplements used to treat nutritional deficiency are magnesium supplements, cyanocobalamin/vitamin B12 and analog supplements, renal multivitamins with minerals, niacin/vitamin B3 supplements, pediatric multivitamins with minerals and fluoride, iron combination supplements, other specialty multivitamins with minerals, vitamin B complex supplements and cardiovascular medical foods.
