Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are supplements for nursing mothers, pregnant women and those trying to get pregnant. They help ensure there are no mineral or vitamin deficiencies that could cause complications during pregnancy or in the development of the fetus.

There are a number of supplements specifically designed to promote healthy pregnancy, often with folic acid, calcium, and iron. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women who take folic acid a month before conception and during their first trimester reduce the risk of defects in the neural tubes of the fetus by up to 70 percent.

Supplements are particularly important for certain women before and during pregnancy, for example, women with: eating disorders; a restricted diet; certain chronic diseases; certain blood disorders; substance abuse problems; or intolerance to lactose and other foodstuffs.

Common drug classes of prenatal vitamin supplements are prenatal multivitamins with iron, adult multivitamins with minerals, iron combination supplements, cyanocobalamin/vitamin B12 and analog supplements, and other vitamin supplements.
