Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by uncontrollable urges to move the legs. It can begin at any age and tends to get worse in later life. The urge usually happens as a result of discomfort in the legs and can disrupt sleep and cause sleepiness during the day.

Symptoms of RLS are often more severe when patients are resting or lying down, often growing worse at night. The urge to move may also be accompanied by discomfort, such as a crawling, creeping, tingling or pulling sensation. Walking, stretching or other activities can help relieve the symptoms temporarily. Dopamine agonists are among the drugs that may be prescribed to treat RLS.
