Rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis is a rare condition in which muscle cells break down and release a substance into the blood that can lead to kidney failure. Most commonly, it is as a result of a serious injury or trauma. Rhabdomyolysis may also be a result of taking certain medications, dietary supplements or drugs.
Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include incredible painful muscle aches, muscle weakness, and very dark urine.
When a muscle is severely damaged, the fibers breakdown and leak a protein pigment called myoglobin into the bloodstream. When the myoglobin reaches the kidneys, it can block the tubes within the kidneys. This can quickly lead to kidney damage and possible kidney failure. Immediate medical attention is required.
There are many causes for rhabdomyolysis, including muscle damage from a serious accident or trauma, heatstroke and some snake venoms. Some medications such as cholesterol lowering statin drugs have been linked to rhabdomyolysis, although it is an uncommon side effect.
Early treatment for rhabdomyolysis is key to ensuring that you make a full recovery. You will have plenty of fluids administered by IV, and in some extreme cases you may have to undergo a dialysis treatment. This will help the kidneys recover as the substances are filtered from your blood. If rhabdomyolysis is caused by another medical condition the underlying medical condition will have to be treated, or if caused by medications, their use will have to stop.
