Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system turns on the cells in the joints. Patients experience swelling, pain and stiffness, which causes damage to the joints, cartilage and bones. It can also lead to other complications such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

People with rheumatoid arthritis are often prone to flare-ups of the condition, during which symptoms worsen. There is no cure, but treatment can reduce the frequency of flare-ups, prevent long term damage and alleviate the symptoms. Lifestyle changes, supportive treatment and medication may help stop the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and minimize the chance of further complications arising.

Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as methotrexate, leflunomide and sulfasalazine block the effects of the chemicals released by the immune system’s attack on the joints. Biological treatments to stop chemicals in the blood from activating are another option. These are usually taken in conjunction with DMARDs.
