The symptoms of schizophrenia often go through relapses and remissions - cycles in which they appear to get worse and then improve. In men, the symptoms of schizophrenia typically manifest in the early to mid-20s, and in the late 20s among women.
Symptoms vary but include a variety of cognitive and behavioral problems, notably delusions and hallucinations. Other symptoms that often manifest in patients with schizophrenia are problems communicating, suicidal thoughts, disordered thinking, and problems with day-to-day functioning. Examples include withdrawing from friends and family, sleeping problems, a depressed mood, and lack of motivation.
Factors that may increase the risk of schizophrenia include a family history of the condition, use of certain psychotropic drugs, and increased activation of the immune system. There is no known cure for schizophrenia, but early treatment can help control the symptoms.
Treatment of schizophrenia often involves therapy, hospitalization, and medication. a variety of antipsychotic medications are used to treat schizophrenia. These include multi-acting receptor-targeted antipsychotics (MARTA), antidepressant augmentation drugs, serotonin-dopamine antagonist (SDA) antipsychotics, first-generation antipsychotics, and partial dopamine receptor agonist antipsychotics.
