Sedation
Sedation is the use of medication to reduce levels of fear, agitation or anxiety. Sedative drugs are often administered before a medical or diagnostic procedure.
There are different levels of sedation, ranging from minimal sedation, in which patients are still capable of talking and responding, through to general anesthesia, in which patients are totally unresponsive, even to pain.
Several different routes of administration are available for sedatives, for example, through inhalation, tablets, injections, and intravenous drugs.
Drug classes commonly used for sedation include phenothiazine antiemetics anxiolytics, non-benzodiazepines, barbiturates, plain, bulk agents for compounding, and first generation (sedating) antihistamines.
