Shingles

Shingles

Shingles is a viral infection, also known as herpes zoster, that affects the nerve and surrounding skin. It causes a painful rash and itchy blisters that look similar those caused by chickenpox.

Early signs of shingles include headaches, high temperature, general unwell feeling and burning or itchy skin in the affected area. It typically lasts up to four weeks, and is localized in one area of the body. A doctor will be able to diagnose the condition on a review of the patient and the appearance of the rash, but may suggest further tests if they are concerned symptoms are caused by a more serious condition, such as meningitis or encephalitis.

Antiviral medication such as Acyclovir or Famciclovir is used to kill the virus. Patients may be advised to take painkillers to alleviate some of the symptoms. A vaccine is also available to prevent shingles developing.
