Sinusitis is the swelling of the sinuses, usually caused by an infection. It is a common condition, and usually clears up on its own within 2-3 weeks. Medication can help if it is taking a long time to go away.
Symptoms of sinusitis include pain, swelling and tenderness around your eyes, cheeks or forehead, a blocked nose, a reduced sense of smell, green or yellow mucus from your nose, a sinus headache, earache, a fever, toothache, or bad breath. Children may also be irritable and have difficulty breathing or feeding.
Sinusitis can be due to several common causes. These include nasal polyps - tissue growths that can block the nasal passages or sinuses. A deviated nasal septum – the wall between the nostrils may restrict or block the sinus passages if it is crooked. Respiratory tract infections such as the common cold can inflame and thicken your sinus membrane and block the mucus drainage. Allergies such as hay fever cause inflammation and block your sinuses.
Mild sinusitis can be treated without seeing a doctor. Make sure you get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, avoid allergic triggers such as smoking, and taking over the counter pain killers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. In severe cases you will have to seek medical treatment. Steroid nasal sprays can reduce swelling in the nasal passages and sinuses. Antihistamines may help if your sinusitis is caused by allergies. In some cases, antibiotics will be prescribed if your sinusitis is caused by a bacterial infection, this is rare as sinusitis is usually cased by a viral infection.
