Skin Allergy

A skin allergy is an allergic reaction to an irritant or allergen. Possible causes of skin allergies include certain foods, medication, contact with some plants, and use of some cosmetic products and washing liquids or powders. Skin allergies come in a variety of forms, such as eczema, atopic contact dermatitis and hives.

Symptoms of a skin allergy include bumps, redness, itching, dry scaly skin, welts, and rashes. It may be localized to one part of the body, or cover the entire body.

Treatment of skin allergies usually involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition through identifying and avoiding the relevant irritant. Medication may also be used, particularly topical products to sooth irritated or inflamed skin. Drug classes used to treat skin allergies are systemic corticosteroids, plain topical corticosteroids, phenothiazine antiemetics, emollients and protectants, first generation (sedating) antihistamines and other corticosteroid combinations.
